The Last Push! Final (And Worst) Weeks of Braces After Jaw Surgery

I mentioned in my last post that that my wires would be ’sectioned’ as part of the end of braces.

This means that the back sections of my wires were clipped and taken off of the brackets (and removed from my mouth). What’s remaining is the section of wire attached to my top four teeth, and the section of wire attached to my bottom six teeth.

In the meantime, I am wearing rubber bands on EVERY SINGLE TOOTH.

Yes, that’s right. Reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter, all my teeth are banded together, closing my jaw tightly.

This type of orthodontic work was incredibly painful the first night, but I immediately noticed a difference in the general closeness and ‘fit’ of my teeth. My teeth sore, but looked MUCH neater and more perfect overall. NO gaps. Now, every top tooth hugs its partner in the lower row closely and comfortably.

The biggest inconveniences? Talking and snacking. Can’t do either very well when my teeth are clamped shut!

This lasts one week, which is followed by a band-free week that’s followed by THE END!!

For observations on swelling and overall appearance changes (I get a LOT of those types of questions here), I encourage you to compare the photos I’m just about to put up with photos in previous posts, especially from November 2008.
